What to Know Before Getting Dental Veneers

Dental Veneers at ESI Dentistry – Esthetic Smiles & Implants

Veneers are an excellent option for enhancing your smile without the need for invasive procedures like cosmetic surgery. These thin porcelain shells are bonded to the front of your teeth, providing a fresh and uniform appearance. Veneers can address a variety of concerns, including crooked teeth and discoloration, and improve the overall look of your existing teeth.

As with any dental procedure, there are important things to consider before getting veneers.

Do You Need Braces Before Veneers?

Whether you need braces before getting veneers depends on the condition of your teeth. Veneers can correct cosmetic issues such as discoloration, minor misalignment, and small gaps. However, if you have significant alignment problems, overcrowding, or bite issues, orthodontic treatment like braces or Invisalign® may be necessary before veneers can be placed. This ensures that your teeth and bite are properly aligned, providing a stable foundation for the veneers and enhancing the overall aesthetic results. During your consultation at ESI Dentistry – Esthetic Smiles & Implants, our dental team will assess your specific needs and recommend the best treatment plan to achieve your desired smile.

What to Expect When Getting Veneers

The process of getting dental veneers involves multiple steps and typically requires several weeks and a couple of visits to the dentist.

First, your dentist will evaluate your smile to determine if veneers are the right option for you. If you require any fillings or dental implants, these must be completed first.

Next, your dentist will prepare your teeth by removing a thin enamel layer from the front surface. An impression of your teeth will be taken to create temporary veneers that you will wear until your permanent veneers are ready.

Once the final porcelain veneers are crafted, you will return to the dentist for their application. The temporary veneers will be removed, and a bonding cement will be applied to your teeth. The permanent veneers will then be carefully placed, giving you a dazzling new smile.

Caring for Your Veneers

After the procedure, you may experience some soreness in your mouth and gums for a few days. This discomfort is normal and should subside as your mouth heals. It’s a good idea to have some Tylenol on hand, just in case.

To maintain your veneers, treat them as you would your natural teeth by brushing twice a day and flossing regularly. Avoid foods that could chip or crack your veneers. Proper care will help ensure your veneers last as long as possible.

Typically, veneers can last up to 20 years. However, if they become damaged sooner, you may need to have them repaired or replaced.

Are Veneers Right for You?

Investing in veneers requires careful consideration of your finances, as insurance may not always cover the cost. Additionally, certain conditions may make veneers unsuitable, such as teeth grinding, crossbite or underbite, gum disease, poor oral hygiene, or severe tooth crowding.

If you’re considering veneers, consult your dentist to discuss whether they are the right choice. Your dentist will guide you through the process and determine if you are a good candidate.
